Come along to have a look at and chat about the work for the second Assemble, Exchange for 2026 at the GSA Students’ Association!
This cross-disciplinary peer crit series aims to encourage collaborative learning, providing a space for students from all programmes across GSA to engage in critical discussions and share ideas and references.
For this session, we will be looking at the exhibition ‘MOTHER’, By David Collins:
MOTHER explores love, longing and shame, devotion and the profane.
MOTHER is not a mother but a symbol.
MOTHER is the family ties that bind us. Sometimes these threads must be cut.
MOTHER is to do with the hoard, and therefore to do with poverty and loss. MOTHER is hoarding as a protective force.
MOTHER hides in plain sight – MOTHER is showing you a red herring as you draw connections where none exist.
My estranged mother once said to me in an argument,
“If you are going to survive in this world, you are going to have to be less sensitive.”
I try to negate this statement both in my life and in my art practice.
MOTHER is a site-specific multimedia installation of dozens, if not hundreds, of works on paper and textiles – drawings, paintings, prints, text, patches, needlework, all congeal into one.
David is a current student on the GSA MLitt Creative Art Practice programme.
