MOTHER
An exhibition by David Collins
Project Space 1, 2nd Floor, GSA Students’ Association Building
Open: Monday 16th March 2pm – Tuesday 17th March 5pm
Private view: Tuesday 17th March 5-7pm
MOTHER explores love, longing and shame, devotion and the profane.
MOTHER is not a mother but a symbol.
MOTHER is the family ties that bind us. Sometimes these threads must be cut.
MOTHER is to do with the hoard, and therefore to do with poverty and loss. MOTHER is hoarding as a protective force.
MOTHER hides in plain sight – MOTHER is showing you a red herring as you draw connections where none exist.
My estranged mother once said to me in an argument,
“If you are going to survive in this world, you are going to have to be less sensitive.”
I try to negate this statement both in my life and in my art practice.
MOTHER is a site-specific multimedia installation of dozens, if not hundreds, of works on paper and textiles – drawings, paintings, prints, text, patches, needlework, all congeal into one.
David is a current student on the GSA MLitt Creative Art Practice programme.
